The Mudroom: What is it and do I need one?

Mudrooms were banished from Australian home designs during the minimalist 60s, now making a comeback in a big way. Read on to find out what it is, why you need one, and how to get the most out of it.
What is mudroom?
Originating in the US (where the weather gets a little more wild and unpredictable), this handy room is finding its way into Australian homes thanks to our love of Hamptons-style builds.
Rather than trudging the outdoors throughout your entire home, a mudroom at the front, rear or internal entryway is designed to contain dirt, snow and wet weather items in one easy-to-clean, dedicated space. When designed well, it has extra storage and seating space so you can comfortably pull off your muddy boots and hang jackets, umbrellas and even kids schoolbags for easy access.
Where should it be located?
The location is entirely up to you and depends on where you most readily access your home. Do you come in through the front door, back door, or via an internal entryway from the garage? Whichever happens to be the case, you want the mudroom to be the first point of entry to catch dirt and mess before you move into the interior rooms of your home.
In our Embrace 29 floor plan, we’ve attached our mudroom to both the laundry and internal entryway from the garage, so you can walk straight in from the car to drop off schoolbags, dirty shoes and wet weather gear. Plus, it’s that much easier to chuck grubby shoes or clothes straight in the wash.
How to create a great mudroom.
There are a couple of things that make for an ideal mudroom to make the most out of this practical space.
Lots of storage
Consider investing in built-in cupboards with hanging space for coats and wet weather outerwear, separate cubbies for each member of the family, and racks for boots, umbrellas and maybe even a dog leash. It’s also a great idea to add hooks for school bags and maybe even a home for towels to dry off after a wet day.
Somewhere to sit
You’ll want to include somewhere to sit down to take off your shoes when you arrive home. Including a built-in bench with storage underneath can make the most of the space you’ve got, or consider purchasing a blanket box for something a little less permanent.
