Durable & Resilient to Australia’s Harsh Climate.

COLORBOND® steel with Activate® technology2 is durable and resilient to Australia’s harsh climate and its long life can help conserve resources and energy that may otherwise be invested in products with a shorter life span.

Thermal Efficiency.

Many people know that the colour of your roof can make a difference to your cooling bill and no less than five of the colours in the COLORBOND® steel range qualify as solar reflective (light coloured) roofing under the Green Star Communities tool. But there’s another way that COLORBOND® steel can help make your home more energy-efficient. Every colour (except Night Sky®) in the standard COLORBOND® steel range features Thermatech® solar reflectance technology. Thermatech® technology is designed to reflect more of the sun’s heat on hot, sunny days, which can mean less dependence on air-conditioning, plus reduced heat stress for your roof

Tested for Australian Conditions

COLORBOND® steel undergoes corrosion testing, durability testing, application testing (to ensure it can be used in a wide range of building and manufacturing applications, and with all the common building products used across the industry) and outdoor exposure testing. As part of the assessment program, there are over 12,000 panels on exposure across Australia, ranging from moderate to very severe marine environments, and from tropical to industrial locations.

The five layers of protection.

COLORBOND® steel is more than just ‘paint on steel’. To endure our unique environment, BlueScope has designed, developed and manufactures one of the world’s most advanced metallic-coated steel substrates (aluminium/zinc/ magnesium alloy-coated steel) which incorporates Activate® technology1 and then protects it further with BlueScope’s exclusive, proprietary paint systems, as outlined below.

  1. The steel base meets relevant Australian Standards, ensuring strict adherence to the required grade and strength.
  2. This is then coated in BlueScope’s industry-leading metallic coating that uses Activate® technology2 to enhance corrosion resistance..
  3. Next, a pre-treatment layer is applied to improve the adhesion of the remaining layers of protection.
  4. A further corrosion inhibiting primer gets baked onto the surface.
  5. Finally, a topcoat of exterior grade paint is baked onto the steel for a beautiful, long-lasting finish that resists chipping, flaking and blistering.

Fire Protection

Roofing, walling, gutters and downpipes made from COLORBOND® steel may be used as part of a compliant system in bushfire-prone areas, including in the most extreme, BAL-FZ (Bushfire Attack Level – Flame Zone) as defined in AS 3959:2018.

Easy to Maintain

COLORBOND® steel is so simple to maintain, areas not naturally washed by the rain, require a regular rinse with clean water to maintain them. And for a roof, clean rainwater will do the hard work for you, which means minimal maintenance for years to come.
